Barangay councilman turns self over, denies shooting Alcoy police chief dead

(Second Update)

The police chief of Alcoy town, southern Cebu died after being shot several times by a drunken barangay councilman outside the town gym last Sunday evening.

Insp. Crisanto Abella sustained gunshot wounds on his head, back, armpit and leg inflicted by Ciriaco delos Santos, a former policeman and councilman of barangay Poblacion, Alcoy town.

The two were drinking before delos Santos shot down the 44-year-old Abella. The suspect is now detained at the Alcoy police precinct.

Abella was reportedly on duty when the incident happened. Investigators revealed that delos Santos confronted Abella on the prevalent presence of criminals in the area.

Delos Santos then fired at least five shots to Abella using a .45 pistol. When police responded, delos Santos fired back. Before running towards a small hut behind the gym, delos Santos grabbed Abella’s 9 mm gun.

Responding police couldn’t fire shots at delos Santos as they made their way through the panicked crowd.

At the hut, delos Santos fired at the police who then returned fire. It took delos Santos’ children, the mayor and relatives to persuade him to surrender.

Delos Santos turned himself and his .45 pistol over and denied killing Abella, saying he just ran away when he heard the gunshots. He refused to say anything more, saying he is waiting for his lawyer./ Correspondent Melissa Cabahug and Jhunnex Napallacan
