No special treatment for suspect, police say

A woman charged with theft was allowed to leave jail to seek medical treatment, the Mabolo Police Station chief said yesterday.

Senior Insp. Hartzel Peter Billedo presented a medical certificate obtained by Marites Lampert to Vice Mayor Edgardo Labella, who chairs the Police Coordinating Advisory Council (PCAC), to explain why she was allowed to go out of jail last Sept. 29.

“There was no preferential treatment given to her … she complained of headaches and upset stomach, and thus, needed immediate medical attention so I granted her request,” Billedo said in a letter to Labella.

Lampert, wife of Dedon owner Herve Lampert, was issued a warrant and arrested at her home at the Ma. Luisa Estate Park in barangay Banilad, Cebu City. She was detained at the police precinct last Sept. 28.

Billedo said he provided police escort to Lampert during her medical examination. She was also allowed to eat her breakfast prior to her return to detention, “contrary to reports.”

A medical certificate issued by Dr. Condrado Dieatro dated Sept. 29 said Lampert was brought to him for medical check at 6 a.m.

Lampert was released on the same day after posting an P80,000 bail.
