Cebu will bear witness to two world record attempts when the Largest Archery Lesson and Largest Archery Tournament commence on Oct. 18 and 19 at the Cebu City Sports Center Gym.
The affair will start at 7 a.m. with the assembly of athletes participating in the Largest Archery Lesson followed by the distribution of archery class kits.
At 9 a.m., the event will commence to be conducted by Rosendo “Don-Don” Sombrio and Mr. Pacheco.
The Largest Archery Tournament on the other hand, will roll off from 10:30 to 12 nn starting with Groups 3 and 4.
A media briefing will also be held during the lunchbreak.
The opening ceremony will start at 2 p.m. where Cebu City Sports Commission Chairman Edward Hayco will deliver the welcome remarks and rationale to be followed by the presentation of the participating schools by Schools Division Superintendent Dr. Rhea Mar Angtud, Ed.D. of the Cebu City DepEd.
The Dancesports Team Cebu City will do a production number depicting the evolution of man (hunting by using bow and arrow).
Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) Chairman Richie Garcia will also deliver an inspirational message before Cebu City mayor Mike Rama and Hayco will dole out a Post-Humous award for Roger Abella.
Rama will also deliver a message and will lead the ceremonial shooting of the Bow and Arrow. The Oath of Sportsmanship and the declaration of the tournament open will be done by Rama and Hayco.
Also expected to grace the event are lawyer Jesus Clint Aranas, secretary general of the Philippine Archers’ National Network Alliance (PANNA) and Simon Wee, international judge/jury, council member of the World Archery Asia and treasurer of the Southeast Asia Archery Federation.
At last count, Hayco said that more than 10,000 archers have already enlisted and that they are hoping to hit the 15,000 mark on tournament day.
The United States holds the current Guinness record for the Biggest Archery Tournament with 9, 426 archers set last May.
The municipalities of Alcantara, Badian, Moalboal, Lilo-an and several others as well as the cities of Mandaue, Dumaguete and even Manila will join the record attempt.
