4 p.m. – Championship Game
The Southwestern University (SWU) Cobras reasserted their mastery of their bitter rivals University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers, 81-70, to barge into the championship game of the Asian Universities Basketball Championship (AUBC) in the semifinals yesterday at the University of San Carlos gym.
After getting blown out by Korean squad Myongji University, 73-83, in their final elimination round game last Friday, the reigning Cesafi champions bounced back with aplomb and turned the game around in the third canto with an 11-0 run spearheaded by back-to-back MVP Mark Jayven Tallo.
Then, power-playing Cameroonian Landry Sanjo got in on the scoring parade and pumped in 10 of his 23 points in the final frame to finish the Green Lancers off.
The winner-take-all title game will be played today at 4:30 p.m. at the Cebu City Sports Institute. The Cobras will be taking on the winner of the other semifinal match between Myongji and the USC Warriors which was still being played in as of press time.
The Green Lancers were within striking distance all game long and were only down by three, 39-42, when Tallo found his groove, scoring on a pull-up jumper and then a corner triple before adding a scoop shot in transition that pushed the Cobras ahead, 53-39.
UV did not go away though, and pulled to within six, 53-59, behind buckets by power forwards Monic Soliva and Alwyn Aguirre. It was then when Sanjo went to work as he scored six straight on an assortment of post moves at the start of the final frame to give SWU a 65-53 advantage.
Tallo added consecutive three-pointers – the second barely beating the shot-clock buzzer – before John Lloyd Luz cruised in for an unmolested lay-in off a steal and a nifty left-handed scoop pass by Jasper Parker that left the Lancers dead in the water., 76-58, 3:14 to go. Sanjo punctuated the dominant win with a thunderous tomahawk slam that gave the Cobras an 80-60 lead.
Tallo contributed 16, Daryl Goloran added 12 and Luz chipped in 10 to give SWU a chance to add their second championship this month.
Aguirre paced the Lancers with 13 while Soliva added 10.
