THE BETS from the Advocacy in the Strengthening of Karatedo (ASK) team and the karatekas of the University of the Visayas (UV) came out the strongest in the kumite event of the Union of Philippine Karatedo Organization Incorporated’s 3rd National/Invitational Open Karatedo Championships as they snared the most number of gold medals last Sunday at the J Centre Mall’s Activity Center.
The Talisay City, Cebu-based ASK team cornered a final-day gold medal haul of five gilts in the age grouper’s division, while UV came out strong in the Men’s Open and 15-16 years old Girls’ division.
Winning gold medals for ASK were Niño Kimie Avila, who won his second gold in the competition after dominating the 6-Under Boys’ Special event, Precious Abegail Belicario, who also tallied her second gold by ruling the 9-10 Girls Kumite, Rome Florens Metante, who reigned supreme in the 9-10 Boys’ Kumite and Jessa Avila, who came out as queen of the 11-12 Girls’ Kumite competition.
Kimie and Belicario won gold medals in their respective age group divisions in the Kata competition earlier last Sunday.
Joining the cast of ASK’s gold medalist in kumite was Archien Vender, who bagged her second gold after dominating the 13-14 Girls kumite action.
The UV squad, on the other hand, was spearheaded by Fausto Vallar, who booted out his foes in the Men’s Open Weight Kumite to snare the gold, Kent Juban, who topped the men’s 65-kg. division, and Gwen Jade Ponteros, winner of the 15-16 Girls’ Kumite wars.
