CCCI, AFOS Foundation ink deal for project to address job-skills mismatch
The Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry has partnered with AFOS Foundation to implement a program to help the government’s K+12 program in producing graduates with the right skills to get jobs.
The project complements the K+12 program which is about improving the demand and practice orientation of technical and vocational education that will be implemented in three areas including in Cebu.
“It will involve Grade 11 and 12 students specifically those who take the techbook track using the dualized training approach,” said Teresa Pono, AFOS Foundation resident representatitive.
“It’s more on hands-on training so the students have lessons then do hands-on practice right away,” she added.
The partnership was sealed with the signing of Memorandum of Understanding signing last Friday during the general membership meeting of CCCI held at the Marco Polo Hotel.
The CCCI’s role will be to help AFOS Foundation link with companies where the students can have their hands on trainings.
“Most companies think this is a better approach because the industries are assured of graduates that are more equipped because their training at the company will already enable them to develop the right skills needed for the job,” she said.
For the project, they also partnered with the academe and industry associations.
“We target four sectors, including IT, tourism, construction and furniture manufacturing so we have partnered with industry associations like CEDF-IT (Cebu Education Development Foundation for Information Technology) and HRRAC (Hotel Resort and Restaurant Association of Cebu),” said Pono.
For the schools, they have already partnered with Sisters of Mary Girls Town for the IT, Zapatera National Highschool for construction.
Pono said they are currently negotiating with other schools like Don Bosco National High School for furniture manufacturing and University of San Carlos for tourism.
“We will pilot it here, in Laguna and Metro Manila. The results will be recorded and will become the basis for making policy recommendations to the Department of Education,” she said.
