Davide says Cebu ready for Pope Francis stopover
Even if the prospects are slim, Cebu Gov. Hilario Davide III said yesterday the province is ready if Pope Francis’ flight is diverted to the Mactan Cebu International Airport (MCIA).
“In the event that happens then we would of course take necessary measures. We will act accordingly to secure the Pope,” the governor said. He said everything is in place for that possibility.
Davide clarified that he has not received any advice that the pope will come to Cebu.
In Bogo City, Mayor Celestino “Junie” Martinez Jr. said he is still hopeful that Pope Francis would visit Bogo in case his flight is diverted to Cebu.
“Though we have a place for him, it’s not air conditioned but I believe it will be okay for him since he’s not after luxury. The city residents will welcome him with open arms. One thing I really like about him is being so down to earth,” he said.

Martinez said they would be honored if the pope can visit the city and other parts of northern Cebu hit by typhoon Yolanda.
Last Tuesday, Transportation and Communications Secretary Joseph Emilio Abaya inspected the MCIA as an alternate airport in case the weather worsens.
“The military is on top of it while the police will help in traffic outside the airport if the Pope lands here temporarily,” said Chief Supt. Prudencio Tom Bañas, director of the Police Regional Office in Central Visayas (PRO-7).
