Comelec resets SK poll gun ban to Feb. 6

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has moved the implementation of the gun ban for the Sangguniang Kabataan elections to Feb. 6.

The Comelec yesterday issued Resolution No. 9928 resetting the start of the election period for the SK elections to Feb. 6 instead of yesterday. The resolution amended Resolution No. 9905.

Despite this, the provincial Comelec office said the Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) election will still push through.

“In the absence of any law seeking its postponement, the SK election will push through on Feb. 21 as scheduled,” Comelec provincial officer Lionel Marco Castillano said yesterday.

“After due deliberation, the Commission deemed that there are compelling reasons to warrant the amendment of the election period for the efficient management of  preelection activities in order to ensure the conduct of clean, fair and honest elections,” resolution no. 9928 signed by Comelec Chairman Sixto Brillantes and six commissioners stated.

Castillano said the “resetting” of the schedule of the election period would give Congress enough time to pass legislation that would either postpone the SK election to October 2016 in time for the next barangay election or pass legislation to amend the SK law.

Resolution no. 9928 shortens the election period and postpones the coverage of the election period from February 6 to March 2.
