Tournament for south private schools dubbed Inter-Private Schools Cup set
Tagbilaran City—A new tournament for elementary and secondary private schools in the south will soon make its debut making it one of the newest arenas in the continuing quest to train and develop promising Cebuano athletes.
The said tournament will be called the Inter-Private Schools Cup. It will be focusing on three particular sporting events—basketball, volleyball and football—and participants will be private schools in the south up to the City of Naga.
University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) athletic director Jonathan Saso, in an interview with Cebu Daily News yesterday, said the event will be unveiled on March 14 and 15 at the USJ-R Basak Campus.
“We have already invited schools starting from the Southwestern University south campus in Quiot, Pardo to Don Bosco Technological Center going towards the Naga City,” Saso said. “We were inspired to stage this competition when we witnessed one like it during the Salesian Youth Movement held at St. Scholastica in Minglanilla last year.”
The tri-event competition, according to Saso, will have basketball for boys in both the elementary and secondary divisions, volleyball for secondary boys and girls and volleyball for girls in the elementary division and football for boys in the elementary and secondary divisions.
“I have already sent around 21 to 24 invitations to different private schools in the south and so far, six have already signified their intentions of joining the event,” Saso added.
Among those who have confirmed are the Divino Amora Academy, the Holy Rosary Academy and the Exceed Academy.
Saso said schools from the south were delighted with this development. He said the plan was actually initiated by USJ-R elementary sports coordinator Rex John Jabal and his counterpart in the secondary division, Danville Cabrillos, with the blessing of USJ-R Basak’s Fr. Glynn C. Ortega.
He also said that the original goal of this competition is to foster camaraderie among the private schools in the south. If the maiden edition will be successful, organizers are eyeing bigger things for next year.
“Initially, nag collect mi’g minimal amount from every pupil sa mga participating schools para sa funding to pay for the game officials. But we are planning to make this event an annual one,” said Saso, who is accompanying his USJ-R Jaguars here for the 2015 Private Schools Athletic Association (PRISAA)-7 regional meet.
