SEEKING REDEMPTION

By: Jonas N. Panerio March 05,2015 - 11:25 PM

Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu look to go farther in NBTC National Championships

With their semifinal loss to UAAP powerhouse National University (NU) still simmering in their minds, the Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-AdC) Magis Eagles seek redemption today as they kick off their campaign in the 2015 Seaoil-National Basketball Training Center National High School Championships with a game against Assumption College.

The reigning Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) juniors champions made it all the way to the Final Four last year but could not keep up with the then UAAP champions NU Bullpups, who were being led by prolific guard Hubert Cani.

With the lessons of that sorry loss and the experience gained from yet another championship run in the Cesafi last year, the Magis Eagles are ready to give credence to their reputation as the best high school basketball team outside of Manila.

“We’re prepared,” said senior forward Zachy Huang, as he plays in his last tournament for Ateneo de Cebu before moving to the University of Santo Tomas for college. “Coming from the loss last year, we’re all motivated.”

The Magis Eagles booked a spot in this stage of the tournament after getting past the University of the Visayas (UV) in the Cebu leg and the Linao National High School in the regionals.

SHS-AdC will take on Davao’s Assumption College, the same team it ousted in the quarterfinals of last year’s competition by the score of 100-36. The other team in their bracket is the Naga City Montessori.

“We just have to play our system and we’ll be fine,” said Huang.
