FOR THE SECOND straight year, Rey Guevarra of the Meralco Bolts was crowned champion in the slam-dunk competition of the PBA All-Star Weekend yesterday in Puerto Princesa, Palawan.
Guevarra, named co-champion with Justin Melton in last year’s contest, prevailed in a slam-off with Ginebra’s Japeth Aguilar to win the crown.
Guevarra scored a perfect 50 in his final dunk, where he took off from the baseline to complete an eye-popping between-the-legs dunk.
Guevarra went to the final dunk needing a 47 after Aguilar tallied 46 after making a dunk from inside the free-throw line.
The contest went to a slam-off after Guevarra and Aguilar both scored 97 points in the final round.
Other contestants were Melton, Barako Bull’s JC Intal and Talk ‘N Text’s Matt Ganuelas-Rosser.
THREE-POINT KING
GlobalPort’s Terrence Rome proved he has the deadliest hands after he topped the three-point shootout, beating fellow finalists James Yap of Purefoods and Intal.
Romeo netted 18 points in the final round, while Yap and Intal scored just 14 and 11, respectively.
The three finished with 18 points each in the first round to make it to the final stage.
Now retired Jimmy Alapag competed in the event but his 15 points were not enough to send him to the final round.
Other participants were San Miguel’s Arwind Santos, Alaska’s Chris Banchero, Blackwater’s Brian Heruela, Barangay Ginebra’s LA Tenorio, Kia’s LA Revilla, NLEX’s KG Cañaleta, former winner Chris
Tiu of Rain or Shine and defending champion Mark Macapagal of Meralco.
The Obstacle Challenge crown went to San Miguel’s Jeric Fortuna, who clocked 32.1 seconds in the finals to beat Jonas Villanueva (37.7) and Banchero (44.9).
