Ceniza finishes 5th in IWF 2023 World Weightlifting Championships in Riyadh

CEBU CITY, Philippines — Cebuano weightlifter John Febuar Ceniza finished fifth in the men’s 61-kilogram division of the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) 2023 World Championships in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia on Wednesday, September 6, 2023.

Ceniza, a silver medalist in the Southeast Asian Games (SEAG) in Cambodia, earlier this year, lifted a total of 296 kilograms.

The gold medal went to Tokyo Olympics gold medalist Fabin Li of China who lifted 308kgs in total.

Italian Sergio Massidda took home the silver medal with a lift of 302kgs, and the bronze went to Hongjie Ding of China with 301kgs.

Ceniza placed eighth in the snatch with 131kgs in total, while Li tallied 141kgs to bag the gold medal. Massidda lifted 137kgs for the silver, and Hongjie bagged bronze with a total of 135kgs.

In the clean & jerk, Ceniza had a decent performance after lifting 165kgs, while American Hampton Miller Morris earned the gold medal with his 168kgs lift, and Li settled for silver with his 167kg effort.

Malaysia’s Mohamad Aniq earned the bronze medal in the clean & jerk after lifting 166kgs.

Meanwhile, Cebuana Olympian and SEA Games gold medalist Elreen Ando and Tokyo Olympics gold medalist Hidilyn Diaz will start their campaign in the women’s 59kg on September 13 at 11:30 AM, Riyadh Time.

Also competing that day are Boholana Vanessa Sarno and Zamboanga’s Kristel Macrohon in the Women’s 71kgs in Group B.   /rcg
