Inmate stabbed 30 times inside Lapu-Lapu City Jail critical
LAPU-LAPU CITY, Cebu — An inmate of Lapu-Lapu City Jail is now in critical condition after he was stabbed by his fellow inmate on Monday, September 18.
The victim was identified as Dennis Dumael, of legal age, and an inmate of the said penal facility for eight years facing a rape charge.

Jail Officer (JO)1 Dennis Balabat said that the incident happened right before the conduct of the inmates’ head count.
Balabat said that the victim was a trustee of the jail facility and was assigned to open the gate for the entrance and exit of on-duty personnel of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP).

How the stabbing happened
He said that while Dumael was opening the gate, another inmate who was identified as Darwel Tero, suddenly attacked the victim and stabbed him several times in the different parts of his body.
Based on the initial investigation, Dumael received around 30 stab wounds, most of them penetrated his stomach.
Balabat said that they are looking at jealousy as the motive of the crime.

Jealousy eyed as motive
This was after the suspect received information that Dumael was communicating with his wife. It was learned that the wife was no longer visiting him in the jail facility.
“Niabot gyud sa punto sir nga basi sa imbestigasyon sa among imbestigador, sa iyang nakuha nga naa siyay impormasyon nga si Dumael manawag ngadto sa asawa sa naulahi,” Balabat said.
(It came to the point, based on the investigation of the investigator, that he got information that Dumael would call the wife of the latter.)
Dumael was immediately rushed to a hospital after the incident and was declared in critical condition.

BJMP to probe stabbing attack
Meanwhile, BJMP-7 spokesperson, Supt. Thomas Agustin Catarata, said that they would also investigate the incident.
He said that they only received the information about the stabbing today.
Catarata said that they would send some personnel to Lapu-Lapu City Jail to conduct an investigation. /rcg
