Asian Games: Agatha Wong misses podium in wushu

MANILA, Philippines — Agatha Wong missed out on a medal in the Asian Games in the women’s Taijiquan and Taijijian final on Sunday at Xiaoshan Guali Sports Centre in Hangzhou, China.

The Filipino Wushu star failed to replicate her bronze medal feat in the 2018 Asiad in Jakarta, Indonesia after placing fourth with a combined score of 19.456 points.

The 25-year-old Wong finished seventh in the taijiquan with a score of 9.72. She was top three in the taijijian, garnering 9.736 points but it wasn’t enough for her to reach the podium.

China’s Tong Xin ruled the tournament with 19.696 points. Basma Lackhar of Brunei copped the silver with 19.502, while Hong Kong’s Chen Suijin completed the podium with 19.476.

In the men’s changquan final, Sandrex Gainsan placed last out of 14 participants with 8,763 points. Home bet Sun Peiyuan won gold with 9.84 points.

Wong won gold in the 2023 Southeast Asian Games in Cambodia in the merged taijiquan and taijiquan event. 

Wong, the 2015 World Wushu Championships taijiquan silver medalist, has five gold medals and two runner-up finishes in the SEA Games since 2017.
