CEBU CITY, Philippines— Ever heard of the most talked about inter-barangay sporting event for the youth in Cebu City?

It’s called the Sugbo Cup.

In its first year, the Sugbo Cup is focused on bringing out the best players in basketball and volleyball.

In a recent episode of CDN SportsTalk, SK Federation President in Cebu City Jessica Resch and SK chairman of barangay Suba Jaybie Mantilla shared some exciting details about the Sugbo Cup.

There are 80 teams in basketball and 60 teams in volleyball in this year’s tournament.

Resch said that they did not expect the overwhelming reaction from both the players and supporters of each team.

“We’re just blessed and guided by Señor Santo Niño,” she said.

Mantilla, a member of Sugbo Cup’s working committee and an athlete himself, highlights the opportunity it provides for young athletes.

“Ang naka nindot sad sa Sugbo Cup is an opportunity sad sa ilaha, at the same time daghan man mag scout nga mga coaches,” he said.

One unique feature of the tournament is that all players should not be part of any varsity team, which gives other players a chance to shine.

In addition to the current events, this October, the SK council plans to introduce E-sports with games like Mobile Legends and Dota, as well as board games like Scrabble and Chess as part of Sugbo Cup’s expanding offerings.
