Concreting in Mandaue’s AS Fortuna to finish in May 26

By: Anie M. Paujana March 23,2015 - 08:54 AM

Commuters and motorists passing through MC Briones and A.S. Fortuna Streets will have to endure the traffic caused by the ongoing road concreting there until May 26 this year.

“Our construction has been delayed because our work during the day is sometimes being cut due to the heavy volume of vehicles passing by,” said Engr. Reymond Catalunia, project inspector of the Department of Public Works and Highways in Central Visayas (DPWH-7).

The road concreting began in February 15 last year.

Catalunia said the concreting starts at 11 p.m. and there were delays due to the movement of pipes owned by the Metropolitan Cebu Water District (MCWD).

Catalunia said if the pipes won’t be moved to safer ground, they may incur damage cutting off water supply in Cebu City and some areas of Mandaue City.

“We need to excavate the roadsides as water catchments are also needed to be installed in the area to prevent the water from overflowing and cause heavy flooding in the area during the rainy season,” he said.

Box culverts were installed as a water catchment in order to divert floodwater.

Catalunia said they are also careful in their work to avoid damaging  the wiring of the Visayan Electric Co. (VECO) and PLDT.

The DPWH-7 included drainage improvements at A.S. Fortuna Extension near the Guizo Barangay Hall where roadsides were reinforced with  riprap so the culverts can divert water flow to the creek.

“Hopefully this can solve or mitigate the severe flooding problem in Mandaue City,” Catalunia said.
