About 12 inmates of the Lapu-Lapu City Jail are under medication after they tested positive for tuberculosis.

Jail officials had the inmates examined at the facility’s clinic which confirmed that they are suffering from the disease. Warden Renante Rubio said they were confined in the infirmary to avoid infecting the rest of the inmates.

Rubio said he talked with the owner of Trigger Co.  at the Mactan Export Processing Zone (MEPZ) 1 to provide assistance to the inmates.

Tomoyoshi Miyagaki, owner of Trigger Co., also pledged to donate P600,000 to build an isolation cell intended for inmates with contagious diseases.

“The facility is supposed to be for 450 inmates only but we are now at 1,200 male inmates and about 100 female inmates,” Rubio said.

Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Paz Radaza said he ordered City Health Officer Dr. Rodulfo Berame to help the inmates./Correspondent Norman V. Mendoza
