Rains in Metro Cebu to continue; El Niño too

By: Doris C. Bongcac, Melissa Q. Cabahug June 21,2015 - 01:45 AM

RAINSHOWERS  in various parts of Metro Cebu will continue in the next few days because of the Intertropical Convergence Zone.

A low pressure area east of Guian, Eastern Samar  may bring more rain.

If the rains continue,  weather forecasters may declare the start of the rainy season, said Engr. Tabada, Pagasa Visayas head.

Nevertheless, a  weak El Niño affecting the country is not yet over.

“Our forecast is that because of the weak El Niño,  rainfall will be below normal in July, August and September, when it’s supposed to already be rainy season,” he said over  radio station dyAB.

Below normal to moderate rainfall is expected in  October and November.

A downpour last Thursday caused flooding in parts of  Cebu and Mandaue cities  but  the volumne of  about 1mm  was way below the 10mm to 15mm average rainfall in Cebu.

In the Capitol, disaster officials are monitoring areas prone to flood and landslide as a result of the recent heavy rain.

When typhoon Seniang hit Cebu last December, more than ten people, most of them living in riverbanks, died in Cebu province.

This is because   most residents  did not expect that the rains  would cause the river to swell and overflow.

One millimeter rainfall  is equivalent to five thousand barrels of water and can already cause flashfloods.
