CEBU CITY, Philippines – Cebu City came alive with solemn gatherings and heartfelt commemorations on November 1 as thousands observed “Kalag-Kalag,” the Filipino tradition of All Saints’ and All Souls’ Day.

In Cebu’s two largest cemeteries, Carreta Public Cemetery and Calamba Cemetery, families and friends came together to pay tribute to departed loved ones.

Kalag-Kalag: Catholics urged to celebrate lives of saints, departed

DUMAGUETE CITY—A Catholic priest urged the faithful to study and understand the real meaning of Halloween and celebrate the lives of saints and the departed in a manner that glorifies God instead of participating in practices that lean toward paganism.

“On All Saints’ Day we celebrate holiness, the sanctity of life, the goodness of God through the saints and we glorify Him, but on the other side, the devil wants to invert the celebration and many people honor darkness, horror, and scary things, knowingly or unknowingly,” Fr. Ronnie Ablong, an exorcist of the Diocese of Dumaguete, said on Friday.

Kalag-Kalag: Mandaue cemeteries visitors on Nov. 1 hit 12,160

MANDAUE CITY, Philippines — Thousands of  people visited the cemeteries in Mandaue City on Friday, November 1.

As of 6 p.m, the Mandaue City Police Office recorded 12,160 individuals who visited their departed loved ones.

Police Lieutenant Colonel Mercy Villaro, MCPO spokesperson, said that the influx of individuals were recorded during very early morning and late afternoon.

Mandaue City ready for ‘Kalag-Kalag’ visitors

Mandaue City Mayor Glenn Bercede inspected the clustered cemeteries in Barangay Guizo in observance of Kalag-Kalag 2024.

Bercede was accompanied by Buddy Alain Ybañez, head of the Mandaue City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO).

He also visited vendors, reminding them not to block the roads as an influx of people is expected on Friday and Saturday.

As of 8:30 a.m. on Friday, November 1, a few individuals visited their departed loved ones in the four clustered cemeteries in Barangay Guizo, Mandaue City. 

CEBU SOUTH BUS TERMINAL STATUS

Traveler numbers continue to rise at the Cebu South Bus Terminal this Friday, November 1, as people head home this Kalag-Kalag season to celebrate with their families in the province. 

WHAT NOT TO BRING AT SOUTH BUS TERMINAL 

Security personnel of the Cebu South Bus Terminal remind commuters not to bring butane and cite some restrictions and what to do if you bring a pet when traveling to the south by bus.

This is as people heading south for the long weekend and Kalag-Kalag start to arrive at the Cebu South Bus Terminal.

Kalag-Kalag 2024: Traffic rerouting for Cebu City cemeteries set

The Cebu City Transportation Office (CCTO) has announced traffic rerouting schemes in several public and private cemeteries starting October 28, in anticipation of the influx of visitors during All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day.

According to CCTO Assistant Operations Head Jounald Bautista, major cemeteries that traditionally see more visitors will be affected. These include Queen City Memorial Garden, Carreta Catholic Cemetery, Doña Pepang Cemetery, Cebu Veterans Memorial Park, Cebu Memorial Park (CEMPark), and public cemeteries in Talamban, Calamba, Cabantan, and Poblacion Pardo.

Kalag-Kalag: Fair weather expected in Cebu, CV this long weekend

The public is advised to bring umbrellas and stay hydrated, especially those, who will be visiting their departed loved ones for the upcoming Kalag-Kalag this weekend.

The state weather bureau in Mactan forecasted that Cebu, and the rest of Central Visayas, would generally have fair weather beginning Thursday, October 31 and until November 3.
