3 more road deaths in weekend accidents

Five persons died while five others were injured in separate road accidents in southern Cebu over the weekend.

In sitio Tambis, barangay Poog, Toledo City, two men were killed on the spot after a six-wheeler delivery van they were riding on, lost its brakes, went over the side of a small bridge and plunged into a 15-meter ravine yesterday at past 10 a.m.

Oscar Suico Layson, 29, the driver of the truck owned by Grandmall, and his helper Raymart Canesal, 25, died after they were pinned under the van’s cargo container, said PO2 Joel Alquiza, desk officer of the Lutopan police.

“According to the residents, they noticed the vehicle was zigzagging on the road before it fell off the bridge. The road was kind of a downward blind curve, and the truck’s brakes might have malfunctioned,” Alquiza said in Cebuano.

Before going over the bridge, the truck hit a pedestrian, Amelita Lapadis of Highway Bunga, Toledo City, and caused a Kia Picanto driven by Marini dela Calzada to crash into a fence. Lapadis was brought to the hospital for treatment while dela Calzada was unhurt.

In Dumanjug town, last Saturday, a 26-year-old man died after he collided with another motorcycle along the national highway in barangay Liong.

Police said Filvincent Landiza of Alcantara town died after sustaining head injuries while the other driver,  Fritzjay Canoy, 25, suffered only minor injuries.

In Argao town, also last Saturday, a 70-year-old woman, Irene Mamac died after the tricycle she rode on was rammed by a Kia Utility vehicle owned by the Cebu Electric Cooperative.
The tricycle driver including three other passengers were hurt in the accident.

Rufo Ricaborda, the Kia utility vehicle driver, is detained at the Argao police precinct pending the filing of charges.
