The Cebu Provincial Board commended 18-year-old judo athlete Kiyumi Watanabe during their regular session yesterday.

Watanabe won a gold medal in the women’s judo 63-kilogram division in the 28th South East Asian Games (SEA GAMES)-2015 in Singapore which brought great pride to Cebu and the country.

She defeated Thai Senatham Orpahin when she scored an ippon of 3:36.

The Capitol board decided to honor Watanabe and give her  P25,000 as a  financial incentive for her achievement after a profile story on her success appeared in Cebu Daily News’ July 12 front page.

The resolution was authored by PB Member Raul D. Alcoseba, co-chairman of the Cebu Provincial Sports Commission.
“It is proper and fitting that we should give commendation for her great achievement and support her dreams and future endeavors in Judo competitions,”  said the resolution.
Watanabe was born in Cebu  to a Filipina mother and a Japanese father. She spent her formative years in barangay Labogon, Mandaue City.

When she was eight years old, she and her family moved to Japan./PIT Intern Mariel Grabillo
