The defending champions Southwestern University (SWU) Cobras broke into the win column as they slipped past the Cebu Institute of Technology-University (CIT-U) Wildcats, 69-64, in a heated game in the 15th Cebu Schools Athletic Schools Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) men’s basketball tournament yesterday at the Cebu Coliseum.
Two-time defending league MVP Mac Tallo delivered the goods with his second double-double in a row of 14 points and 10 rebounds. He also had four assists and two steals.
However, his most telling contribution was a gorgeous lay-in with 53.2 seconds remaining that gave the Cobras a 68-62 lead.
Melvin Holper also had 14 while Tallo’s backcourt mate John Lloyd Luz was equally lethal with 10 points, nine rebounds, six assists and two steals.
SWU evened up its win-loss record to 1-1 while CIT-U fell to 0-2 for the season.
The undermanned Cobras became an eight-man crew after forward Janjan Auditor suffered an ankle sprain in the third.
The Wildcats quickly took advantage of Auditor’s exit and whittled down an 18-point deficit to just four, 60-64, behind a brief 7-0 spurt anchored on Joshua dela Cerna who hit one turnaround jumper after another.
Holper kept the Wildcats at bay with two free-throws but CIT-U was relentless and crept to within four once more, 62-66, after a put-back by Bridrik Brigoli. But the Cobras had Tallo, who responded with a nifty spin move that left Brigoli sprawling, paving the way for an unmolested lay-up.
In the juniors action, the Cebu Eastern College (CEC) and the University of San Carlos (USC) nabbed their second straight wins with victories over their respective rivals.
CEC drubbed Don Bosco, 60-42, while USC beat the University of Cebu, 76-67.
The upset of the day belonged to the University of San Jose-Recoletos Baby Jaguars, which routed last year’s runners-up, University of the Visayas Baby Lancers, 65-43.
