USC ends UC’s reign in secondary Cesafi athletics
The University of Cebu (UC) saw its mighty run in the secondary athletics competition of the Cebu School Athletics Federation Inc. (Cesafi) come to a screeching halt, yielding the crown it held for several years to the University of San Carlos-Basic Education Department (USC-BED).
USC-BED made a lot of noise yesterday at the Cebu City Sports Center, snagging its first-ever crown in the secondary competition by raking in 14 gold medals, 12 silvers and 11 bronzes.
The dethroned UC finished with 11 golds, 12 silvers and 12 bronzes.
USC got 11 golds, seven silvers and seven bronzes in the boys’ competition, while its girls’ team pocketed three golds, five silvers and four bronzes.
UC’s boys’ team harvested five golds, seven silvers and four bronzes. The school finished with six golds, five silvers and eight bronzes in the girls’ events.
Finishing third in the second competition was the Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu, which netted eight golds, 10 silvers and seven bronzes.
Though it faltered in the secondary competition, the UC athletes did not go home without something to celebrate after the Webmasters retained their crown in the college division.
The Webmasters amassed 18 golds, 13 silvers and 13 bronzes.
USC wound up second with 12 golds, 12 silvers and 11 bronzes.
The University of Southern Philippines-Foundation (USP-F) settled for third with four golds, nine silvers and 12 bronzes.
Prince Joey Lee spearheaded the Webmasters’ medal-haul as he pocketed three golds after ruling the steeplechase’s 3000-meter, 5000m and 10,000m events. Benjamin Leynes contributed two golds after dominating the 100m and 200m competitions.
John Cliff Debulasa of USP-F grabbed part of the limelight after he ruled the 800-meter in record-breaking fashion after he timed 1:59:38.
