THE University of San Jose-Recoletos Jaguars kept their unbeaten record intact in the secondary girls division of the Cebu Schools Athletics Foundation Inc. (CESAFI) volleyball tournament after crushing the University of San Carlos Warriors (3-2) 14-25, 25-22, 25-20 yesterday at USC main gym
The Jaguars had a slow start but the wards of Coach Roldan Putot managed to turn the tables in the next two sets to grab the victory and secure the solo lead in the girls standings.
Coach Putot is hoping that his girls could carry their momentum against CEC whom they will battle next.
“I always tell the players nga ang mindset every game is to win. Mas maayo man gyod nga ma sweep ang eliminations,” Putot said. Also, the University of Cebu girls opened their campaign on a strong note by annihilating the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (2-3) 25-23, 15-25, 25-20.
Meanwhile, the University of San Carlos Lady Warriors finally broke into the win column after whipping the University of Cebu Webmasters in straight sets, 25-12, 25-13, 25-15.
The Lady Warriors (1-2) jumped to a huge 20-7 start and never gave the Lady Webmasters (0-1) any chance to recover.
In the men’s division, defending champions Southwestern University Cobras (1-0) pounded the University of Cebu Webmasters (0-1) 25-19, 25-17, 25-16.
SWU Coach Lemuel Ariza said their experience played a key role in the win and he hopes to repeat their title-run last year.
“Actually ang ako aim this season kay hopefully makuha namo ang championship,” Ariza told CDN.
Meanwhile, games scheduled today were cancelled due to the unavailability of a venue. Collegiate games slated today will be played on Wednesday at the Aznar Coliseum while secondary matches are being put on hold due to the Regional Milo Little Olympics which starts next week in Iloilo City.
