Pope sending proxy to Cebu in January

Since he can’t visit Cebu in January, Pope Francis is sending a cardinal from Myanmar to represent him during the 51st International Eucharistic Congress (IEC) in Cebu City from Jan. 24 to 31, 2016.

The Pope appointed Archbishop Charles Maung Cardinal Bo of Yangon, Myanmar as “papal legate” or personal representative to the IEC, said Fr. Mhar Vincent Balili, secretary of Cebu Archbishop Jose Palma.

Bo, a member of the Salesians of Don Bosco, was named cardinal by Pope Francis last Jan. 4, 2015.

Bo will preside over the closing Mass or “statio orbis” in a large field of reclaimed land in the South Road Properties on Jan. 31.
