Two persons died while more than 20 were injured in a three-vehicle collision in the national highway in barangay Canduman, Mandaue City past 5 a.m. yesterday.
A mini-bus driven by Antonio Abatayo lost its brakes and rammed into two jeepneys and two persons before hitting an electric post on the road.
This was the same intersection where basketball coach- pastor Manolet “Badz” Subang was killed when his motorcycle was slammed by a wayward truck in an 11-vehicle pileup last August.
In yesterday’s accident, two victims—security guard Edwin Rago of Consolacion town and an unidentified woman—died later at the Mandaue City District Hospital and Eversley Childs Sanitarium.
The bus came from Carmen town in the north and was headed to Cebu City when the accident occurred.
The mini-bus carried with over 30 passengers lost its brakes while traveling along the national highway near the intersection called “Eskina Canduman”, said traffic investigator P02 Ruben Cerdeña of the Mandaue city police.
The bus driver said that when he noticed his brakes malfunctioning, he swerved the bus to the left lane, thinking that only a few vehicles were using it.
But the bus hit two pedestrians and swerved to the right lane only to hit a jeepney and Rago, who was headed to Consolacion town.
On reaching the right lane, the bus hit another jeepney headed for Cebu City and then rammed an electric post. A total of 21 passengers were injured.
The unidentified woman died of head injuries.
The second pedestrian, 58-year-old Eduardo Padayon of Upper Jagobiao, Mandaue City, fractured his arm.
Those on board the two jeepneys were not hurt. The bus driver was treated for a right leg injury at the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center in Cebu City.
He faces charges of reckless imprudence resulting to multiple homicide, multiple physical injuries and damage to properties.
