A late afternoon fire left 54 families homeless after it destroyed 25 houses last Saturday in barangay Pagsabungan, Mandaue City.

No one was reported hurt.

The fire razed houses made of light materials in Anakma Compound of the barangay, said SFO2 Cipriano Codilla.

According to the City Social Welfare and Services (CSWS), 34 of the 54 families were accounted as renters of these houses.

Initial investigation showed that the fire started in the house owned by Luciana Martel, who was allegedly cooking and left this unattended.

She was surprised when she saw thick smoke coming from her kitchen at 5 p.m.

She shouted for help and took her children immediately out of the house to safety.

The Mandaue City Fire Department received the alarm at 5:15 p.m. and immediately deployed their fire trucks and firefighters from Basak Fire Sub-station.

Fire fighters from Cebu City, Consolacion, Lapu-Lapu City and fire brigade volunteers rushed to the site after the Mandaue City Fire Department raised the fire warning to the third alarm.

The fire caused heavy traffic along J.P. Rizal Highway after the Pagsabungan Road and its interior portion were closed to traffic as firefighters were battling the fire.
