UC jins, USC tankers rule

The University of San Carlos and University of Cebu dominated the swimming and taekwondo competitons, respectively, in the 25th Cebu City Olympics yesterday.

Both sports are among five events which were held in advance. The annual meet, which choses the city’s representatives to next year’s Central Visayas Regional Athletic Association (CVIRAA) meet, officially opens on Nov. 11 yet.

The swimming tournament ended its two-day run with 60 final races at the Cebu City Sports Center (CCSC) Aquatic Center with partial and unofficial tally showing USC leading the pack with 17 golds.

University of Cebu’s (UC) Karen Mae Indaya leads the individual tally in secondary girls with 5 golds. Justin Garrido of Unit 6 has 4 gold medals.

Unit 8’s Christante Veloso reigns in the secondary boys division with 4 golds and 1 silver. Also with multile golds are Gil Anton Talisaysay of UC with 4 golds and Jonvic Tiro of USC with 2 golds.

USC’s Caroline Doloricon leads the elementary girls division with 5 gold medals while Helena Julia Rabanes of USC and Jo Arianna Cabanes of Unit 7 won 2 golds each.

Unit 8’s Sean Christian Monje shows the way in elementary boys competition with 4 golds and 1 silver while Jehoash Reign Garrido of Unit 6 and Justin Alain Monreal of USC collected 4 and 2 gold medals, respectively.

TAEKWONDO

Meanwhile, the high school jins from the University of Cebu dominated the taekwondo event held at the  Zapatera Elementary School.

UC harvested eight gold and two silver medals for a total of 10. Defending overall champion University of San Carlos-Basic Education Dept. trails UC with four golds, five silvers, and two bronze medals in both girls and boys divisions.

The University of San Jose – Recoletos, on the other hand, collected two gold medals.

In the combined elementary boys and girls tallies, Unit 3, Unit 7, and UC collared two gold medals a piece.

All gold medalists from the fin, fly, bantam, feather, light, middle, welter, light heavy, and heavyweight categories will represent Cebu City in the upcoming CVRAA meet slated in the City of Naga from January 31 to February 6, 2016.

In a related development, tournament managers in archery and arnis, also failed to provide official results.
