THE HIGH school belles of the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) bowed out on a victorious note in the Shakey’s Girls’ Volleyball League Season 13 national finals as they trumped the Angelicum Learning Center in straight sets, 25-17, 25-19, in their final elimination round game late Wednesday at the Cuneta Astrodome.
The Central Visayas representatives were already out of the championship picture after suffering losses to La Salle-Lipa and National University (NU).
But the Jaguars did not let that get in the way as they went all out in their last match to place in third in Pool B with a 1-2 (win-loss) mark.
Meanwhile, NU and La Salle-Lipa booked their spots in the finals after eliminating their respective opponents in the semifinals yesterday morning.
The National Capital Region bets got back at last year’s finals tormentor Central Philippines University (CPU) with a 25-22, 25-19 victory while La Salle-Lipa’s spikers, held off Davao City National High School, 25-22, 25-23, in the semifinals.
Southern Luzon, which stunned NCR in a dramatic decider, 25-22, 23-25, 32-30, last Tuesday, and the host team were disputing the championship at presstime.
In the crossover semis, the Lady Bullpups of NCR, starring Faith Nisperos, Jasmine Nabor, Thea Gagate and setter Joyme Cagande, took control early then held off the Western Visayas’ crew headed by Princess Ann Robles, Claudine Troncoso and Julie Ann Robles’ rallies to pound out the straight-set victory
La Salle-Lipa, bannered by Jamel Maraguinot, Jewel Encarnacion and Justine Jazareno, sustained its top form coming off the elimination round but needed to toughen up in the stretch to likewise complete a sweep over the Southern Mindanao bets composed of Lycha Ebon, Georgie Loreto and Thea Borres.
