The Talk ‘N Text Tropang Texters rode on the endgame heroics of top point guard Jayson Castro to hack out a tight 91-86 win over the Star Hotshots last night in the 41st PBA Philippine Cup at the Quezon Convention Center in Lucena City.
Castro exploded for 33 points and bailed the Tropang Texters out of danger by delivering seven of his total output in the final two minutes of the close encounter.
Talk ‘N Text thus sealed its third straight win in four games, creating a five-way logjam at the number-one spot in the team standings.
Also sporting 3-1 (win-loss) records are the Alaska Aces, San Miguel Beermen, GlobalPort Batang Pier and Rain or Shine Elasto Painters.
The Hotshots absorbed their third loss in five games.
Castro was efficient in the out-of-town encounter, making 12 of his 24 attempts from the field while making five of his five attempts from the three-point land.
Meanwhile, Cebuano giants Greg Slaughter and June Mar Fajardo cross paths today when the Barangay Ginebra Kings tangle with the San Miguel Beermen in the main game of today’s double-header at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig City.
The two big men, who figured in tough battles in the Cebu Schools Athletic Federation Inc., are expected to figure prominently as their respective teams gun for a crucial win.
The Beermen are looking to wrest the solo lead, while the Kings are gunning for a second straight victory.
Ginebra started the tournament with back-to-back losses before barging into the win column with a 93-92 win over the Alaska Aces last Nov. 7 in Dubai, UAE.
In the opening game, the Meralco Bolts will try to finally snatch victory in their match against the Barako Bull Energy.
Meralco is the only winless team left in the 12-team field after dropping its three games.
Barako Bull has one win to show in three starts.
