EMPLOYEES of a convenience store in Cebu City yesterday rescued a baby boy that lay on the ground along S. Osmeña Street in Cebu City.

The boy,  six to seven months old, was placed in  a  box by his teenage mother who squatted nearby.

“Nakuyawan mi kay gibilin ra niya ang iyang anak unya nagtaligsik ra ba (We were anxious because the mother just left her son on the ground and it was drizzling),” said security guard Martin Ancao, who was assigned at the Bonjour convenience store.

Sheena Loranas, accounting staff of Bonjour, said they took the baby inside the store.

“We would have wanted to bring the mom as well so we can give her food but she refused to go with us,” she said. The mother just squatted on the roadside, carrying a stick.

She seldom spoke and threatened to hit some of those surrounding her.

The store employees said the mother, who spoke  Tagalog, did not seem to be in her  right mind. They sought the assistance of the Department of Social Welfare and  Services, but were told  the office was closed since it’s a weekend.

A policeman later arrived and called officers of the Mabolo Barangay Hall. Windell Untal, Bonjour manager, turned over the child to barangay workers who also  brought the mother with them.
