The Cebu City Council approved an ordinance imposing a one-year moratorium on demolitions in Cebu City.

During their regular session Wednesday morning, Councilor Alvin Dizon pushed for the approval of the ordinance for the second time.

Several urban poor groups and non-government organizations attended the session hall.

They clapped and cheered after the ordinance was approved.

After the session, the groups staged a short program in front of City Hall and expressed their gratitude to the City Council.

They said they hope Acting Mayor Edgardo Labella signs the ordinance and won’t veto it.

Dizon, who authored the measure, reintroduced the ordinance to the council earlier this month after Mayor Michael Rama vetoed it last year.

The mayor is serving a two-month suspension order issued by the Office of the President through the Department of Interior and Local Governments (DILG).
