Top local runners to compete in sixth edition of SM2SM Run tomorrow

Some of the top names in the local running scene are expected to slug it out in the SM2SM Run 6 tomorrow, starting at the SM City Cebu Northwing open parking lot.

Leading the list of contenders in the men’s side is last year’s 21-kilometer champion Rafael Poliquit Jr. of Tagum City. Other top runners who will be joining are reigning National Milo Marathon champion Noel Tillor of Cebu, well-known triathlete and trainer John Philip Dueñas and former Milo Marathon champion Juneil Languido of Bukidnon.

All will be vying for the P60,000 top prize in the 21k division.

Tillor, who is coming off a victory in a 42k race last month, said the race will be a tough  one for him, not only because of the presence of top runners but also because of the different training he is undergoing for triathlon.

According to Tillor, he’s been training for quite a while for this race but he’s also starting to transition to triathlon.

“It’s hard for me to balance my time in running since I’m also improving my swimming skills. It’s hard balancing my time to train especially that I have a job also,” said Tillor, who is a native of Bogo City, northern Cebu.

The 30-year-old Tillor said he is training for triathlon as he is expected to join the Cobra Ironman 70.3 Asia Pacific Championships to be held at the Shangri-la’s Mactan Resort and Spa this August.

WOMEN’S 21K

In the women’s side, the country’s Marathon Queen Mary Joy Tabal will be joining her final footrace before flying to Japan the next day to prepare for the upcoming Boston Marathon slated April 18.

One of her foes this Sunday is rival Mary Grace delos Santos.

Around 6,000 runners are expected to answer the starting gun on race day. A total of 1,760 will be joining the 21k half marathon while 2,037 enlisted for the 12k.

The 6k category has 1,494 runners while 652 signed up for the 3k category.

This race is organized by the SM Prime Holdings Inc. for the benefit of the Cebu News Workers Foundation (Cenewof) and the Children of Cebu Foundation Inc.
