TWELVE delegates from the Filipino Chamber of Commerce of Hawaii paid a courtesy visit to Cebu Gov. Hilario Davide III on Monday morning as part of their joint trade mission to the Philippines.

Davide welcomed the Filipino visitors from Hawaii and discussed with them the status of education, technology, foreign business opportunities, tourism, and the food industry in Cebu.

Davide explained that Cebu is a leading educational center with its universities continuously producing topnotchers in board exams and bar exams.

He also noted the increasing number of foreigners who are studying here, which he said is a testament to the high quality of education that Cebu universities offer.

Davide also pointed out the presence of several IT centers, export processing zones, manufacturing companies and BPOs in Cebu.

“Cebu is very progressive in terms of technology and other businesses,” he said.

“We have several foreign companies that manufacture their products here like Timex, Pentax, and even Nike clothesline,” he added.

When asked about food safety and the food industry, the governor assured the guests that every city and municipality have their ordinances regarding food regulation and that the Department of Health is also on hand to address food safety concerns.

Davide also highlighted plans to further develop the countryside, both in the north and the south, as part of Cebu’s tourism campaign especially now that summer months are approaching.

Sam Acosta, the group’s president, said this visit is very relevant and exciting because right now, they are “falling in love with the beautiful Cebu.”

The delegates have been traveling all over the Philippines since Feb. 16 to personally see what the country has to offer.

The group is composed of businessmen, service professionals, government employees, realtors, and developers.

There are a total of 52 delegates, with twelve coming to Cebu and the rest to other parts of the country.

Acosta is hopeful that their visit to Cebu could open doors to more business opportunities. The group is also planning to bring their families in their next visit and probably start investing in the different businesses present in the place.

“There’s so much progress happening in Cebu right now,” he said.

Acosta said that with the presence of different industries here, its potential for investment is very likely.

Acosta said their travel itinerary in Cebu includes visits to the food processing plants, textile industries and furniture firms, among others.
