PROVINCIAL health authorities will provide vaccination, deworming, neutering and other services to pets in Lapu-Lapu City as part of the annual observance of National Rabies Awareness Month this March.

Provincial veterinarian Dr. Rose Vincoy said Lapu-Lapu City recorded 16 rabies cases last year, one down from the previous year.

These services will be offered free of charge in Lapu-Lapu City from March 11 to 18.

The Provincial Health Office also disclosed its schedule for veterinary services from March 9 to April 28 in nine towns and one city in Cebu.

They will visit Cordova town on March 8, Minglanilla town on March 9, Talisay City on March 10, Dumanjug town on March 16, Moalboal town on March 30-31, Argao town on April 7-8, San Remigio town on April 13-14, Tudela town on April 19-20, Poro in Camotes Island on April 21-22 and Balamban town on April 27-28.

With Camotes and Malapascua Islands declared as rabies-free zones since 2011, Vincoy clarified that this doesn’t mean there are no stray dogs in these areas.

She said this meant that regardless of the number of stray dogs, there is zero incidence of rabies infection.

The PVO celebrates two rabies-awareness months every year, with March marked as National Rabies Awareness month and June as the Provincial Rabies Awareness month.

Vincoy reiterated that pets should undergo vaccination to protect both its owners and their neighbors.

“If the dog is vaccinated with anti-rabies, we are not only protecting its family but the people within the community as well,” Vincoy said.
