NGCP lifts yellow alert advisory in Visayas grid

THE NATIONAL Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP) lifted the yellow alert in the Visayas after achieving enough power reserves on Saturday night.

NGCP announced the lifting of the alert on its Facebook page.

Betty Martinez, information officer for NGCP–Visayas, said in a phone interview yesterday the grid has enough reserves.

As of 6 p.m. yesterday, system capacity for Visayas grid was 2,108 megawatts (MW) while demand peacked at 1,399 MW. Its reserve was 709 MW, almost thrice the required reserves.

Martinez earlier explained that power reserve for the Visayas grid should not be lower than 200 MW.

“Even when the Visayas grid was at yellow alert, we still have enough reserves because we have been augmented by Luzon,” Martinez said.

Since the yellow alert has been lifted, Martinez said the Visayas is assured that there will be no power interruptions.

“So far, we have not experienced power crisis here in Cebu due to low power reserve,” she said.

Last Friday, Energy Secretary Zenaida Monsada announced the yellow alert advisory during “Task Force Election 2016” campaign in Cebu.

Monsada cited the preventive maintenance shutdown of some power plants in Luzon.

Peak demand on Thursday in the Visayas was 1,700 MW, higher than previous demand of 1,300 MW to 1,400 MW. Peak hours are from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
