2010 saw the birth of the Pinoy Pride boxing series and under the stewardship of Michael P. Aldeguer, Pinoy Pride’s stock skyrocketed and has become one, if not the most, popular boxing series in the country today.
Though the creation of the Pinoy Pride series has given him years of experience in putting up big fight cards, Aldeguer, President/CEO of ALA Promotions International, still can’t help but be wary of how a fight card will turn out.
Aldeguer admitted that the upcoming “Time Has Come Donaire Vs. Bedak” card has given him sleepless nights.
“Of course, I still feel nervous. It never stops. It was much easier putting up a fight card before. The expectations of the people is higher now. Before they just wanted to watch boxing. But now they want to watch quality boxing,” said Aldeguer.
Aldeguer said ALA Promotions has put in a lot of work to ensure the success of this Saturday’s mammoth boxing extravaganza that will pit Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire Jr. against Hungarian fighter Zsolt “Mr. Lefthook” Bedak at the Cebu City Sports Center.
“Cebuanos are very passionate and very smart. They know what a good fight is and we, at ALA and ABS-CBN, want to make sure that the people will be getting their money’s worth,” said Aldeguer.
Co-promoted by Bob Arum’s Top Rank, the upcoming fight card took several months to materialize, according to Aldeguer.
Even one of the undercards featuring the unbeaten 20-year-old Mark “Magnifico” Magsayo versus Chris “The Hitman” Avalos has also given Aldeguer some anxious moments.
“Honestly, I am not sure if we made the right decision. It may not be good for ALA or Mark because he may be too young to face an opponent like Avalos. But that’s what the Cebuanos want, give Mark a real test and if he makes it, I’m sure he will sky rise,” said Aldeguer.
The upcoming fight may have demanded a lot of effort from ALA Promotions but, this early, it would seem all that work hasn’t gone to waste.
“Ticket sales are very encouraging. The problem now is how to accommodate those who want the VIP seats. It is already sold out, everyone wants the all the front row, they want the best seats. It’s a good problem. Sales for the bleacher section has yet to pick up but it will start a day before the fight,” said Aldeguer.
