Cebu City PTA gets backing for incentives of public school students
THE Cebu City Council issued a resolution to support the Cebu City Federation of Parents-Teachers Association’s (FPTA) plan to give P1,000 cash incentives to students enrolled in public elementary schools and high schools.
Under the resolution’s guidelines, P300 will be allotted for school supplies, P300 for school uniform, and the remaining P400 for school shoes.
“Ang problema man gud basta inig opening sa klase kay ang mga ginikanan mangita og kwarta para ipalit og uniform ug school supplies (The problem is that during the opening of classes parents look for money to buy uniform and school supplies (for their children),” FPTA president Jun Tumulak said.
Tumulak also said that parents will be required to give a copy of the receipt for liquidation.
“Kung kinsa tong mga ginikanan nga dili maka liquidate, naa tay sanctions para niana (Those parents who cannot liquidate, we have sanctions for that). The parents may no longer receive the cash incentives next school year,” he said.
In 2015, the FPTA proposed the same resolution but it failed to get the nod of the council.
“Their proposed ordinance was not passed because of the (limited) time, but I advised them that they have to start from step one,” said Cebu City acting mayor Margarita “Margot” Osmeña.
Tumulak said they decided to bring up the resolution again. Cebu City currently has a total of 137 public schools with more than 170,000 students.
Tumulak said the population may reach 180,000 next year.
“Despite the DepEd (Department of Education) order nga nag-ingon nga ginadili ang mga bata nga mag-uniform, but para gyud nato mga ginikanan mas malipay gyud tingali ta mag tan-aw nga ang mga bata naka full uniform (prohibiting school children from wearing uniform, but for us parents we would be happy to see the children in full uniform),” Tumulak said. /USJ-R Intern Rabboni Borbon
