A TOTAL of 82 students had their practicum at the Department of Social Welfare and Development in Central Visayas (DSWD-7) in the second semester of 2016.

These are students from different schools taking up different courses like Physical Therapy, Social Work and Psychology. Others also take up BS Development Communication and AB Political Science major in Public Management and Development.

The DSWD has undertaken the Student Training Program (STP) as a strategy to encourage graduates and undergraduates to take up various courses.

“Through this, the Department will be able to enhance the knowledge, attitude and skills of the students relative to the field of study as well as develop their competencies and expose them to actual practice in various settings,” said Christine Escolano, Human Resource Management officer of DSWD-7.

She said the STP is also a response to the constant demand for highly competent professionals/workforce who can face the challenges of global competition and excellence.

With rich manpower resources and a broad and comprehensive opportunities which provide students wider perspective in various settings, DSWD-7 serves as a laboratory for testing out and translating theories into practice.

It is seen that DSWD would not only provide field placement or on-the-job training (OJT) service but ultimately become a beneficiary of the effort because the students are seen as potential manpower resources.

The STP exposes students to the operations of DSWD in the field office, community and centers.

Escolano encouraged those students taking up social behavioral sciences, secretarial, psychology, library science and Information Technology to have their practicum or OJT at DSWD-7 and be part of the government’s dynamic social welfare agency that is always ready to provide the “Maagap at Mapagkalingang Serbisyo.”
