Impeach move won’t prosper — Davide, Magpale

THE impeachment complaint filed against President Rodrigo Duterte on Thursday does not seem to be ruffling any feathers as more officials point out how it is unlikely to prosper in the light of the fact that a “super majority” of the House of Representatives is allied with the Duterte administration.

Cebu Gov. Hilario Davide III, who belongs to the Liberal Party, said that it still remains to be seen how the impeachment complaint will progress, but he has his doubts if it will succeed.

“I sincerely doubt that it can reach first base. I don’t know if it will work. We will just see,” he said in Cebuano.

Vice Gov. Agnes Magpale, who belongs to the same party with that of Davide, likewise expressed her doubts if the impeachment complaint would prosper.

“Impeachment – I doubt if that will prosper because of the reality in politics, and with the majority, I don’t think it will succeed,” Magpale said.

Senator Cynthia Villar, who was in Cebu on Friday for the launch of environmental movement Pasalamat sa Katauhan, also expressed the same sentiments with that of Davide and Magpale.

“I don’t think that they would get the numbers,” Villar said.

“You can always file, but getting the numbers is the problem. Anybody can file, they have 290 congressmen. It’s not a good indication. Ang mahirap dyan is to get the numbers,” Villar said when sought for comment on the filing of the impeachment complaint against the President.

Former Cebu Archbishop Ricardo Cardinal Vidal, who celebrated his 61st anniversary as a priest yesterday, refused to comment on the issue.
Vidal, however, apologized for the passage of the death penalty bill in the Lower House.

He said that he was reminding the people that we are not the author of life.
