4 nabbed for illegal fishing in Bantayan

FOUR fishermen were caught by authorities illegally fishing in seawaters off Barangay Hilontangan, Bantayan town, Bantayan Island in northern Cebu, on Thursday.

The suspects are now detained at the Bantayan Police Station. They are Crispin Santillan, the boat owner; Marlon Destura, 42, the boat captain; Henry Ofiang, 45, engine mechanic; and Buenafe Layos, 40, assistant mechanic.

PO2 Joelymar Gilbuena of Bantay Dagat Task Force in the municipality, said the suspects were caught fishing in a prohibited area.

Seized from them were 50 tubs of assorted fishes worth P25,000 and a commercial fishing boat worth around P1 million.
