Authorities gear up for Holy Week

By: Apple Ta-as April 11,2014 - 07:31 AM

THE Land Transportation Office (LTO) and Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTRFB) have started conducting terminal and roadside inspections and random drug testing of drivers as part of its effort to achieve zero accident rate during the Holy Week.

Joel Maloloy-on of the LTO said they are coordinating with various government agencies, especially the law enforcers, to augment their force and help in the campaign.

The inspection started yesterday and will run until April 20. “We hope that drivers, especially those with long trips, will have enough rest and be free from alcoholic drinks and drugs as these are the main reasons for road accidents,” he said.

LTO has deployed personnel in the north and south bus terminals, as well as in the port area to make sure no bus company will violate any rules, especially the no overloading policy.

With the expected increase of commuters during the Holy Week, LTRFB will issue special permits allowing operators to use their spare units in order to address the need for more public transport.

The Police Regional Office in Central Visayas is on heightened alert as part of its preparation for the Holy Week. Police personnel are deployed in seaports, airports, terminals, churches, tourist destinations and other areas where people usually converge. /With a report from Michelle Joy L. Padayhag
