The Cebu City Council passed the ordinance extending P5,000 cash assistance to solo parents in Cebu City.

Under the ordinance, solo parents who don’t receive assistance from their partners and whose annual income doesn’t exceed P60,000 can receive the cash aid.

Nine councilors voted for the passage of the ordinance lobbied by Cebu City Councilor Gerardo Carillo while two voted against it and three abstained.

The cash assistance will be given annually to qualified solo parents who have voted at least three consecutive local and national elections.

Cebu City Councilor Mary Ann Delos Santos, who objected to the ordinance, said the law will only encourage solo parents to transfer to Cebu City because of the dole out.

Based on records of the Department of Social Welfare and Services of Cebu City, there are 800 qualified solo parents in the city.
