Mandaue Chamber cites achievements, adds 21 members

By: Aileen Garcia-Yap June 18,2014 - 09:15 AM

AS PART of its thrust to grow as an organization, the Mandaue Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI) recently elected eight members into its board of trustees and welcomed 21 new members during its General Membership Meeting early this month.

With the addition, MCCI now has 200 members.

MCCI president Philip Tan in his speech said that the past year has been a challenging year for the chamber with the region hit by natural and manmade calamities including the Zamboanga siege, Bohol earthquake and supertyphoon Yolanda.

“These challenges tested the indomitable spirit of the Filipinos and also gave us a wake-up call on how to deal with disasters and help address climate change,” he said.

As an advocacy group, the MCCI organized activities to extend help to the victims of these calamities.

They partnered with Rotary International District 3860 and Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc. for the relief operations including the coordination of medical and dental teams from Manila through a partnership with a dental implants company and donated fishing boats to assist in the recovery of the fisher folks in San Remigio town.

“Looking at the brighter side, the calamities showed us the power of ordinary citizens, the private sector, especially the business community. When we come together and work as one, we can really make a difference. Let us learn from the lesson of Bohol earthquake and supertyphoon Yolanda. Let us build back stronger and build better,” he said.

For many years now, the chamber has been very active in institutionalizing the performance of governance systems to professionalize the bureaucracy of the Mandaue City Government and, in the process, make the city more attractive to investors.

“This supports the city’s direction to improve its business processes, become ISO 9000-compliant and eventually, be ISO-accredited by 2016,” Tan said.

He also cited the chamber’s sponsored seminars to benefit its members such as those on employee productivity and efficiency, and corporate social responsibility.

It also organized its annual flagship project the Mandaue Business Month in August and backed the Alkansiya program of the Social Security System.

Trustees, MEMBERS

During the meeting, the leaders and members updated the organization’s constitutional bylaws that were created in 1983 yet, as the chamber is set to celebrate its 50th anniversary next year.

Tan said he considers the amending of the bylaws as one of his legacies as chamber president.

The newly-elected trustees are Girlie Garces of San Miguel Brewery, Beverly Dayanan of Contempo Property Holdings, Inc., Cristina Lo of Coast Pacific Manufacturing Corp., Carmel de Pio-Salvador of Global Carrier Phils., Inc., Mark Anthony Ynoc of San Remigio Properties, Glenn Anthony Soco of GA Satellite Ventures, Inc., Jeruel Roa of Center for International Education and Wilson Ng of Ng Khai Development Corp.

The new members include Marco Polo Plaza Ceb, Shaldan Philippines Inc., Contempo Property Holdings Inc., Shaldan Philippines Inc., and Oyster Bay Seafood.
