DANNEL Jay Tormis and Val Stephen Jaca of the University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters’ table tennis team will help carry the load of the country’s campaign in the upcoming 2015 World University Games when the event also known as the 28th Universiade blasts off this coming July 3 to 14 in Gwang Ju City, Korea.

UC athletic director Bernard Ricablanca told Cebu Daily News yesterday that the Webmasters’ table tennis aces, Jaca and Tormis, will be leaving the country for Korea on Friday together with head coach Jessica Jawad-Honoridez.

The UC representatives, alongside the other athletes of the world, will be billeted at the Universiade Village, said to be the soul of the Games.

The Universiade is an international biennial multi-sporting event intended for university athletes by the International University Sports Federation (FISU). Its organizers have claimed that the event, held every two years in a different city around the world, “is second only in importance to the Olympic Games.”

A total of 13,000 athletes, coaches and officials are expected to flock together for the events.

Among the events to be competed in are athletics/track and field, archery, badminton, baseball, basketball, diving, fencing, football (soccer), golf, gymnastics (Artistic and Rhythmic), handball, judo, rowing, sport shooting, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, tennis, volleyball and water polo.
