The Cebu provincial government has signed an agreement with a school in South Korea for a program to teach students of the University of the Philippines Cebu and Cebu Technological University how to make traditional Korean arts and crafts.

Gov. Hilario Davide III signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Wang Eun Sook, the vice president of Songgok University last January 25 at the Capitol.

Under the MOU, teachers from Songgok University will train students from UP Cebu and CTU from May to June 2016.

After the training, 10 to 15 students will be chosen and brought to Korea for six more months of training at the Songgok University.

“Our nation is aiming to teach those students so they can be experts and produce their own products. In return, they can teach other Filipinos also,” said Wang.

Dr. Choi Hoon Young, president of the Korea Philippine Educational and Cultural Exchange Corporation, said they chose UP and CTU as the recipients of the program because their targets are state universities.

Wang assured that the university will shoulder all the expenses, including accommodation and air fare.

“On behalf of the Cebu provincial government, I would like to thank you for choosing Cebu. I’m sure many students are interested to learn and join the program,” said Davide.

This is the first time that Songgok University participated in the Philippine-Korean student-training program.

Songgok University is located in Gangwon-do, South Korea, just two hours away from Seoul.
