Trump’s predicament and Mindanao crisis

The likelihood of US President Donald Trump facing impeachment grew with his decision to fire FBI Director James Comey.

While he reportedly bragged about his firing of Comey during a meeting with Russian officials at the Oval Office and described him as “crazy” and a “nut job,” Trump’s alleged disclosure of classified information to them along with Comey’s firing sparked an independent probe.

Leading the probe is former FBI director Robert Mueller. What worsened the Trump-Russia controversy was Moscow’s alleged boastful claim that General Michael Flynn can influence Trump.

Another controversy is coming from the Russian camp who bragged about their closeness with former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn whom they said can influence Trump.

While the Senate investigation learned that Flynn lied to the US government when he declared that some corporation financed his travel to Russia when it was the Russian government that did, Trump dismissed the findings as “media leaks.”

While some sectors say President Trump’s actions are not impeachable, they agree that his administration should be held more accountable to the people.

President Rodrigo Duterte’s rejection of European Union (EU) aid due to their constant criticism of his war on illegal drugs came without consultation from allies like newly minted Foreign Affairs Secretary Alan Peter Cayetano.

As a result, Cayetano is now left justifying and explaining the President’s rejection to the public.

While President Duterte is reliant on China and Russia to prop up the economy, a lot of Filipinos remain distrustful of these two nations and support the country’s ties with the US and the EU.

In Mindanao, I wish the government the best of luck in vanquishing the Maute Group who laid siege in Marawi City.

I know it is not going to be easy since the Maute extremists can blend in with the Muslim population, making it difficult to locate them. I hope the martial law declaration will eventually end with the Maute Group’s defeat. Let us pray for the people of Mindanao who are caught in the crossfire.
