Cebu’s 445th founding anniversary celebration began yesterday with the opening of a week-long agricultural trade fair of products from 41 towns and 40 private establishments.

Fruits and vegetables are offered for sale at affordable prices at the back of the Capitol’s main building.

After the flag-raising ceremony led by Gov. Hilario Davide III in the morning, about 500 people gathered at the booths to check out the fresh produce.

“There are more displays of organic vegetables this year and more localities participating in the fair,” said Provincial Agriculturist Roldan Sarajena.

There were fresh tomatoes from Sibonga town, eggplants from Toledo City and high value crops from Dalaguete, the vegetable basket of Cebu.

Carved wooden furniture, birds, footwear and bags were among other items being sold at the fair.

Sarajena said that products sold in the fair cost P5 to P50 cheaper than those sold in public markets.

The week-long trade fair is one of several activities the provincial government has lined up for its anniversary celebration.

More surprises

Capitol employees look forward to the announcement of the governor about an anniversary bonus for provincial workers, but Davide begged off from disclosing more details to avoid spoiling the surprise to be announced soon.

The Capitol’s Local Finance Committee has yet to decide on the amount of the anniversary bonus for employees. Last year, the workers got P15,000 each.

In last year’s celebration, Davide said that bonus for 2014 may be bigger, if finances are available.
Cebu province’s anniversary is celebrated on August 6.

On this day in 1569, Spain’s King Philip II appointed Miguel Lopez de Legaspi as governor of Cebu. Republic Act 8952 declares August 6 as a special non-working holiday for Cebu province and the highly urbanized cities of Cebu and Lapu-Lapu.
