Public school teachers to undergo drug test

Teachers are supposed to be role models and therefore must not be involved in illegal drugs.

Following the arrest of an OIC principal of Santicon Elementary School in Badian town in a drug raid a few weeks ago, Cebu Provincial Anti-Drug Abuse Council (CPADAC) will be conducting a surprise drug test among public school teachers.

Joey Herrera, executive director of the CPADAC, said during their meeting with the school heads last week, they support the plan to conduct a surprise drug test in public schools to clear suspicion that their teachers are drug users.

The OIC principal, Reynante Alinabon, was arrested in a buy-bust operation in barangay Poblacion, Badian late last month.

Police said Alinabon admitted to them that he used illegal drugs.

Dr. Arden Monisit, Cebu provincial schools division superintendent, said the case of Alinabon was the first recorded case of a public school official involved in drug activities.

Monisit said he supports the move of the CPADAC to conduct a surprise drug test to clear their ranks from teachers who are supposed to be role models but are illegal drug users.

Meanwhile, CPADAC conducted a surprise drug test in the municipality of Tuburan and nobody from the 320 job order and regular employees tested positive of drug use.

Tuburan Mayor Democrito Diamante told Cebu Daily News that three personnel, two job order employees and one regular employee, did not undergo the drug test.

The mayor, who also submitted his urine sample, said he will dismiss the two job order employees and will tell the regular employee to resign.
He said he is convinced that the three employees escaped from the drug test.

The mayor said that last year, the same regular employee skipped a surprise drug test saying he had to stay home due to a mild stroke.
Diamante revealed that he later found out that the employee lied.

Now that he skipped the drug test again, Diamante said he will no longer let this pass.

The mayor said he is happy that this year, none from the 230 employees tested positive and hopes that they will continue the healthy practice of not using drugs.

In 2011, 13 employees of the town tested positive of drug use, one employee was found positive in 2013 and none was found positive of drug use last year.

Tuburan is the fourth town where CPADAC conducted a surprise drug test this year.

Last May 25, four male job order employees of Alegria town, south Cebu tested positive of drug use.
