A woman suffering from a nervous breakdown slit the throat of her 2-year-old granddaughter in barangay Tubod, Toledo City, southwest Cebu.

The baby was rushed to the Toledo District Hospital where she was  declared dead.

Barangay tanods turned over 50-year-old Melianida Pelarca to the police after the incident.

Her mother, Corazon Macapaz, 73, said Pelarca became unstable after suffering nervous breakdown.

She said  Pelarca tried to kill herself by hanging last Aug. 21 but was rescued.

The toddler was left in the care of her grandmother since her parents were working in Ormoc City.

Macapaz said she was awakened by the baby’s cry around 4 a.m. last Sunday and was shocked to see the bloodied child being carried by Pelarca, said PO3 Carlos Barluado of the Toledo Police Station.

Police coordinated with social workers who are assessing Pelarca’s mental health.
